The month of May is a great time to remove limiting beliefs, take charge of your life and do things your own way. This is a month in which you can manifest kindness, hope, and sweetness into your life.

You do not have to be born in May to connect with the below spirit animals, anyone can. However, if the themes of this month resonate with you then the spirit animals later discussed can be great companions in your journey.

You can benefit even greater from the positive attributes of May by learning more and connecting with spirit animals. A fun and easy way to do this is by setting an intention before you fall asleep. Set the intention for the spirit animal to appear to you in your dreams, and don’t forget to journal it.

Another way you can connect with your spirit animal is through meditation. Both methods take some practice, but you won’t regret adding meditation to your life.

Spirit animals are here to awaken your inner qualities to improve yourself. To then consequently improve your life. They also protect you and provide you with guidance. They are here for you, and all you need to do is to consistently practice meditation or set an intention before you sleep.

1. Fox

Foxes are all about being quick-witted, researching, and creating solutions. This is a spirit animal that will push for mental expansion. For example, if you have been feeling stagnant about your career. The fox will guide you to investigate how you can improve yourself, your career and your public image.

By getting spiritual guidance from the fox, you will notice that you have more hope, and faith and that you are prone to broadening your horizons at any chance you get. Since May is all about sweetness in your life, the fox guides you to take the actions necessary to make dreams happen.

The fox spirit animal teaches you to roll with the punches. So, if you are not feeling your best mentally, the solution-oriented guidance of the fox will push you to research mental health services or to confide in a trustworthy person.

Furthermore, if you feel like your finances are not going well? This spiritual animal guide encourages you to be savvy and to either upskill or find another way to make an income.

Overall, the fox is a practical spiritual guide. It uplifts you by helping you believe in yourself and to have faith. Then it pushes you to take charge of your life in the most proficient way.

2. Bull

Taurus is the Latin word for bull. Both the zodiac sign and the symbolism of the animal are associated with themes of comfort.

This spirit animal is all about charging forward in life. It is a strong guide that delivers results, especially if you want to manifest abundance into your life. And since May is all about removing limiting beliefs and striding forward with hope, naturally the powerful bull made it onto this list.

Furthermore, the bull also symbolizes fertility. This does not always mean literal fertility but can also mean directing your energy to producing ideas. If you are a creative, the bull can be a great guide for you. This is because it inspires creativity in you and pushes you to be bold in showing off your work.

Another symbolism of the bull is strength. The bull pushes you to be strong in your convictions and to believe in yourself. If you feel yourself becoming hesitant and afraid for the future then this guide can help you rebuild your faith.

The bull is associated with the root chakra. This is the chakra located at the base of your spine, and when it is aligned you become grounded, confident, full of energy, and stable.

Practice aligning your root chakra by being in nature, following a guided meditation, doing a grounding meditation, or saying positive affirmations to yourself. Not only will these practices help you feel calm and confident, but they will also bring you closer to the bull.

3. Raccoon

In some Native American tribes, the raccoon is described as a trickster. However, its overall symbolism is of adaptability, secrets, and resourcefulness. So, if in the month of May you are struggling with either stagnation or boredom, then the raccoon spirit animal is a great spirit companion.

The raccoon can be a great spiritual guide if you want something new in your life. It pushes you to be creative, and resourceful. This is a May animal that will celebrate when you are able to make something out of nothing.

Since May is all about having hope, faith, and manifesting kindness. The raccoon spirit animal will guide you to widen your horizons and seek out opportunities. It instills a sense of self-preservation, self-confidence and perseverance which is beneficial in challenging circumstances.

Conclusion

This month take charge of your physical and mental health, also remove limiting beliefs by getting in touch with your innermost self. You do not have to do this alone, your spirit animals are here to guide you through life.

Both the fox and raccoon will encourage you to not give up. They both celebrate when you let yourself be solution-oriented. Yes, your feelings are valid and life can get tough. However, recognize when the time has come to widen your horizons and look towards the future with faith.

Furthermore, the bull will guide you to not lose touch with reality and it guides you charge forward and to not be afraid of showing off your hard work. The bull celebrates when you allow yourself the freedom to explore ideas and bring them to fruition.

More about May

The birthstone of this month is the emerald. This crystal symbolizes inspiration, compassion, unity, and unconditional love. Whilst May’s birth flower is the Hawthorn. Which symbolizes hope, happiness, and faith. Both symbolisms reflect the positive vibrations of May that will help you get past limiting beliefs and take charge of your life.

What are May’s birthstones? What are their meanings and symbolism?

May is the fifth month of the Gregorian calendar. It is springtime in the Northern Hemisphere and fall in the Southern hemisphere. May houses two zodiac signs of distinct personalities and affinity: Taurus and Gemini. The May birth flowers are Lily of the Valley and Hawthorn.

Etymologically, it is commonly believed that May was named in honor of the Greek goddess Maia. According to legends, Maia was the embodiment of growth and progress. She was a nurturer which isn’t unlike May that provides a favorable climate for lives to thrive.

Early May spots the peak of Eta Aquarids, an annual meteor shower that originates from the famous Comet Halley (1P/Halley). The spectacular astronomical phenomenon is visible both from both hemispheres.

Throughout history and across different cultures, the month of May has found itself in association with various gemstones. Commonly referred to as birthstones or natal stones, they’re a subjective list of gemstones that are constantly changing. For the purpose of this article, we’re picking three gemstones to represent May: emerald, agate, and sapphire.

1. Emerald

Above: Emerald and diamond necklace. Credit: Engin_Akyurt@Pixabay

Emerald is both a traditional and modern birthstone for May. It is one of the most famous gemstones and definitely the most famous gem of the beryl gem family it belongs to. Another notable member of the beryl family is aquamarine.

The name ’emerald’ was derived from the Greek word ‘smaragdos‘ which means ‘green gem.’ The first documented emerald was mined in Egypt in 1500 BC and was estimated to be over 2 billion years old.

Emerald gained itself a flattering title “The Jewel of Kings,” because it was favored by kings and other royalties. Among the royal aficionados of the green gemstone was the famous Egyptian queen Cleopatra. When she’s not entangled in Roman-Egyptian politics, Cleopatra was passionate about a few things. Among them were rose and emerald. Emeralds were worn by Cleopatra as adornments. Her palace was decorated with emerald. It was also given out as gifts to foreign dignitaries.

Emerald’s soothing green color has a calming effect. One could reasonably speculate that its luscious green reminds us of Mother Nature. This is a fitting birthstone for May because it is the time when the fields will be shrouded in the color of the emerald.

Emerald is a symbol of wisdom, intelligence, growth, fertility, immortality, and longevity. In Vedic astrology, emerald is connected to Mercury which is the planet of intelligence. It is believed that the stone has the power to grant its wearer strong wit that can help in areas such as communication and negotiation. The green gem is also believed to bring prosperity and abundance. Spiritually beliefs say that it is a powerful stone that promotes regeneration and recovery as it is aligned to the Heart chakra.

Emerald is also a popular option for engagement rings and one of the best alternatives to diamonds. It is believed that the stone encourages fidelity and a blissful marital life. The gemstone is the traditional 20th Wedding Anniversary stone and it symbolizes the everlasting love of couples that only gets better through the years.

2. Agate

Above: Agate and its banding. Credit: malachit-obchod@Pixabay

Agate is the traditional May gemstone. It is an opaque, semi-precious stone that comes in diverse patterns and colors. Due to the way it’s formed, agate is generally a banded stone. The banding distinguishes agate from other members of the chalcedony gem family such as jasper and bloodstone.

As mentioned, agate is found in a diverse spectrum of colors and patterns. You can find them in colors ranging from amber, bright blue, to deep black.

In his thesis On Stones, Greek philosopher Theophrastus said that agate got its name from Achates, a river in Sicily now known as Acate or the Dirillo, where the stones were sourced. The rock is still found in that region to this day.

Agates have found uses in many other areas such as decoration and adornment. Specifically, agates had been incorporated into necklaces, earrings, rings, and rosary beads; they are utilized to create decorative spheres, hearts, and eggs. Thanks to their durability and visual pleasantness, agates were used as basins or bowls in ancient times. Abundant specimens of these basins can be seen and enjoyed in European museums up to this day.

Different agates have different meanings. But in general, agate symbolizes balance, stability, self-confidence, and amplification of one’s natural ability.

The month of May is ruled by the astrological signs Taurus and Gemini which are both associated with the agate stone. Those who were born under the astrological sign Taurus are known to be prudent and reliable. Wearing an agate gem can help them increase their productivity. It can also keep them inspired in fulfilling their plans and goals for the future. The Geminis can also benefit greatly from this stone. Those who were born under this astrological sign are known to be flexible and quick-witted but they can also tend to be nervous and inconsistent. Wearing an agate stone can aid them in remaining calm and focused. The soft vibration of this stone promotes a well-balanced life by harmonizing the Yin and Yang energies.

Although some agate can be very expensive, it is on average less expensive than the other May birthstones, emerald and sapphire. This makes it perfect as a more affordable gift for May birthdays and as a decorative birthstone.

3. Sapphire

Above: Cut Sapphire. Credit: johnno49@Pixabay

Sapphire is the mystical birthstone for May. It belongs to the corundum gem family. Although the word sapphire often brings up the image of a blue gemstone, it can exist in many different colors, such as orange and green. However, a special case exists for the color red. Instead of being a red sapphire, red corundum has a unique designation—ruby.

Sapphire symbolizes intelligence, knowledge, nobility, wisdom, truth, and sincerity. The blue gemstone is also believed to protect its owner and has healing powers.

For over a thousand years, this gem ruled as the May birthstone in the Tibetan civilization. It is purported to provide mental clarity and emotional stability. Sapphires were used by the Tibetans as prayer beads to facilitate prayer and meditation. In Buddhism, the precious gem is believed to promote spiritual enlightenment, especially the blue sapphires.

In the Middle Ages, clerics adorned blue sapphires because it was believed that the gemstone was connected to heaven.

May Birthstone Poem

Find out what birth flowers May babies are associated with. What do these flowers mean according to the language of flowers? What are the stories and origins of these flowers? Get your answers below.

The month of May was named after Maia (or Maius in Latin), the Greek goddess of growth. In this delightful month, living creatures flourish as Mother Nature warms the cold winds of March with her warm hug and shoos away the unpredictable showers of April. There are many flowers that thrive in this beautiful month. But two flowers stand out as the most popular birth flowers for May babies. These two flowers are lily of the valley and hawthorn. Let’s take a look at the meanings, origins, and other details of these flowers.

Lily of the Valley

Lily of the Valley is the primary birth flower for those born in May. Convallaria majalis is the scientific name of this bell-shaped white flower that hangs along its stem like a drop of snow.

The flower also resembles tears and is often referred to as “our lady’s tears.” In Christianity, it was told that as Virgin Mary wept for the crucifixion of Jesus, her tears fell and became lily of the valley or our lady’s tears. The flower was then brought to heaven to measure the purity of all souls. It is a symbolic flower to Christians and also used as a charm against evil. Some believes that the lily of the valley protects the gardens from evil spirits.

As an ultimate wedding flower (and a sign of humbleness), Lily of the Valley was selected as the bridal bouquets for the royal weddings of Catherine Middleton in 2011 and Princess Grace of Monaco in 1956. It is also the favorite flower of Christian Dior, who formulated perfumes that simulates its sweet fragrance.

The Lily of the Valley symbolizes humility and purity, the qualities represent May babies in the language of flowers. Instead of pushing forward, the flower rather droops its head and rests it beneath its large green leaves. The dropping of its head is a symbol of humility.

May babies are understanding and empathetic which could be contributed to their humbleness, as symbolized by the lily of the valley. It’s one of the most favored flowers to give your grandparents to honor them for their contributions to the family and society. This flower also signifies good fortune and is celebrated in France in the festival La Fête du Muguet. Every first of May, the French would give each other a bouquet of lily of the valley to attract good fortune.

The most effective way to attract good luck is to offer it to another person. Yes, one often overlooked aspect of birth flowers is instead of being on the recipient of your birth flowers, you can also choose to give your birth flowers to people you care about. Take pleasure in giving lily of the valley to your family and friends this month of May and expect an absolute return of happiness from your deed.

Hawthorn

Hawthorn is the secondary birth flower for those born in May. Crataegus rhipidophylla is the scientific name of this delicate white or pink blossom that grows in a small tree with stiff thorns. Crataegus comes from the Greek word “kratos” which means “strength.”

The flower blooms in this sturdy tree, and it looks quite similar to the dogwood flower and cherry blossom. Planting a hawthorn tree in your garden is a great idea considering its many uses both in culinary and medicine. From its blooms, berries, leaves, stems, and bark, you can gather ingredients to cure ailments.

The hawthorn berries make good jelly or homemade wine. Its leaves and buds are edible, and you can add them to your salads. Hawthorn barks are also used in herbal medicine to aid in digestion. On top of that, hawthorns will make a great addition to your garden because they can serve as a decoration that can enhance your landscape design.

The hawthorn flower symbolizes optimism and superior happiness. People born in May are known to be enthusiastic. May babies are described to be enthusiastic that which make them hawthorn flower’s parallel. The thorns in this flowering tree are in place to serve as protection against animals and insects. Giving hawthorns as a present means that you care about the recipient.

A Few More Words

May is a beautiful month of transition. It graces us with meaningful birth flowers that signify the hopes and dreams of its benefactors. Offering these birth flowers to your parents implies that you cherish their love for one another. Receiving a bouquet of these birth flowers from your partner means that your affection is appreciated. Naturally, they are also a way to express your support in your friend’s endeavor. These blooms symbolize sweetness, motherhood, and humility. A birthday is not only a celebration of one’s beginning, for it is also an opportunity to connect with people. And giving a bouquet of birth flowers as gifts to May babies is the most elegant way to communicate your deepest emotions and establishing this connection.

Hawthorn and lily of the valley are also birth flowers for May Taurus and May Gemini.
