The month of April starts right after the Spring Equinox. This is the month in which there is daylight increase and the flowers have started blossoming. With all this growth and light, April feels like the month in which there is a sense of newfound hope.

April has an earthy quality to it. Yes, Earth Day is in the month of April, but it is also when Taurus season starts, also an earth zodiac sign. This month, try to tap into the energy of spirit animals that will ground you but also celebrate you when self-indulging.

Spirit animals are here to guide you to embrace your inner qualities and to feel empowered. So, if you see any of the below spirit animals or their symbols, don’t forget to thank them for being there for you.

There are various practices to find out what spirit animal you were assigned with at birth. However, the same way you are constantly changing throughout life is the same way you are guided by different spirit animals at different points of your life.

If you want to get in touch with your assigned spirit animal, you can practice sleeping with the intention of seem them in your dreams. You can also do this for any spirit animal that you want guidance from.

April is the time to craft the changes you’ve set to yourself in January, with the newfound energy you’ve gained in March. This month is all about renewal and earthly pleasures. So, use this month to blossom into who you want to be for the rest of the year.

1. Bear

The bear spirit animal is connected to mother earth. Its energetic feel is of determination, strength, courage, balance, and integrity. The bear is a common spirit animal among Native American tribes. It has wholesome symbolism, so this fact isn’t surprising.

The bear pushes you to be a leader in your life. This is an animal guide that creates external changes that force you to not take a back seat. Thus, if you are feeling like your life is stagnant or you do not feel in control, ask for guidance from the bear.

The bear also encourages you to not rush through your renewal process. Instead, it inspires you to enjoy every moment of your growth.

Overall, the bear is all about determination. It shows you that in life you have to be determined to be your most authentic self. This spiritual guide celebrates integrity and authenticity. So, if you are currently unsure or feeling defeated, the month of April is the best time to tap into the bear energy if you want to gain willpower.

Furthermore, the bear is also a great spirit animal to ask for protection or fortitude of mind. If you are afraid of things going wrong, the bear can guide you to stay true to your path. The bear fortifies your mind to be protected from external energies that may sway you off your path.

2. Groundhog

The groundhog is a loner mammal that loves sleep. Which makes it a great spirit animal to tap into in the month of April. This is because Taurus is a zodiac sign that also loves sleep and spending long periods alone. Taurus season starts in April, so do not miss out on the opportunity to deeply connect with the groundhog.

The groundhog symbolizes generosity, happiness, hard work, and self-assessment.

If you feel like you are not being rewarded for your efforts, the groundhog can help you assess if you are worth rewards, or if you have to work even harder. The groundhog may push you to spend a short period in isolation to self-assess what may be missing or holding you back from being rewarded in life.

Another way in which this animal guide can be of benefit to you is If you are at a crossroads. The groundhog is all about investigating and burrowing yourself in essential information. The information you gain will help you make a choice and move forward.

3. Ladybug

We all know that a ladybug landing on you is a sign of good news and abundance. As a spirit animal, the ladybug is the harbinger of transformation. However, the ladybug does not deliver an instant transformation. Instead, it creates a short period of a plateau in your life, to give you a chance to consider your general direction.

For the month of April, the ladybug is a great spiritual animal guide to connect to. This is especially true if you have felt generally unhappy with your current life direction. Let the ladybug instill inspiration in you and watch how you start recognizing how to gain fortune.

Overall, the ladybug represents inner grace, self-forgiveness, good luck, and good fortune. These are archetypes that help you refine your inner qualities during the month of April.

What’s amazing about this spiritual guide, is that it does not encourage suffering to be able to transform. For example, an individual adapts to circumstances and becomes stronger and more resilient due to a negative occurrence.

Instead, the ladybug guides you to indulge in earthly things during your plateau period, so that you experience exactly what you deserve in this life. This is meant to push you towards the best version of yourself.

Conclusion

April is an amazing time for renewal and to ask yourself if this is all you want from life. April is the month of exploring your ambitions once more. And you can do this with the assistance of spirit animals.

The bear will help you be brave in every venture you take. Whilst the groundhog will assist you in making sure you have all the necessary information to make the right choice for you. The ladybug is here to instill inner grace and luck.

If any of the above spirit animals appear to you, then it is time to pay attention to their symbols and how they may be significant to your life.

April & Zodiac Signs

April is the fourth month of the year in the Gregorian Calendar. In the old Roman calendar, April used to be the second month. That was before January and February were added.

In April, two zodiac signs and a cusp are observed:-

Aries ♈ (March 21 – April 19) – The Ram

Taurus ♉ (April 20 – May 20) – The Bull

Aries-Taurus Cusp ♈♉ (April 16 – April 22) – The Cusp of Power

April Zodiac Signs

These signs and cusp share similarities that make it difficult to tell them apart. But they are also different in many ways that make them complete opposites. So, what really are these April star signs and cusp? Let’s take a closer look at these astrological phenomena.

1. Aries ♈ Zodiac Sign (March 21 – April 19) – The Ram

Aries is the first sign of the zodiac. They’re the self-proclaimed leader of the zodiac wolf pack. Their symbol is The Ram but if it were up to them, they’d probably prefer “Alpha Wolf” as their symbol.

Anyway, you’re an Aries if you’re born between March 21 – April 19. It is considered the Major April Sign for it covers more than half of April (April 1 – April 19, 19 days in total).

Quick Aries Facts

Element: Fire

Mode: Cardinal

Strengths: Confidence, leadership, innovation, honesty

Weaknesses: Short-tempered, Irritable, combative, and aggressive.

Famous people: Jackie Chan, Leonardo da Vinci.

Romantic Compatibility: The sign is a fire sign. It is best suited to either air or other fire signs. Its most compatible signs are Gemini, Leo, and Sagittarius.

Facts about Aries

Attention seeking

Aries adores praises and commendations. They love being appreciated by their loved ones. This is one of the reasons they value competition. They are so competitive and would go any length to get praised. They constantly yearn to take charge and lead.

Honest and transparent

Aries are transparent about what they’re doing. Sometimes they’re honest to the point of being called insensitive. This insensitivity couples with their hot temper means that they’re the most likely employee to be reported to HR in any given year.

Anyway, the typical Aries won’t lie to you. They don’t see the need to hide anything. They are what they are: rough around the edges but honest to a fault.

Aries’s Friendship

Even though Aries are very social people, they are quite private. They are the type to be friends with everyone and have only a few people as their friends. This is because they don’t see the need for other people to enter their inner sanctum. But once you have gained their trust and they become comfortable with you, you will learn that there are no shady sides to them. They are loyal and open. They see no reason to lie or appeal to your sense of judgment.

Strong but Fast Flame

Aries individuals are energetic, passionate, and extremely motivated. This much is true before their patience runs out anyway. Aries is a cardinal fire sign. Cardinal signs are very powerful and self-motivated but they sometimes sacrifice longevity for intensity. Simply put, Aries’s cardinal flame burns vigorously but there’s a time limit to it.

Here’s how it might play out if an Aries were to start a business. First, they get excited about this new disruptive business idea they have. Next, they give the idea their 130%, ignoring everything else in their life—which may include taking a daily shower. Their business is starting to pick up, but it’s not as fast or exciting as Aries expects. They get bored and they have this brilliant new idea…. And the cycle restarts.

2. Taurus ♉ Zodiac Sign (April 20 – May 20) – The Bull

Taurus is the second April sign and also the second sign in the zodiac. Does it bother them to be the second sign? Nah. Not really. Taurus is materialistic and realistic but they also couldn’t care less about small matters like this.

Anyway, if you’re born between April 20 – May 20, you’re a Taurus (also known as a “Taurean”). It is considered the Minor April Sign because it covers only 10 days in April (April 20 – April 30) which is shorter than Aries (20 days).

Taurus’s ruling planet is Venus which rules over love & beauty.

Taureans enjoy activities that bring them close to nature, and they fare well with gardening, working with their hands, cooking, music, and romance. The zodiac sign is a hallmark of the harvest of the fruits of labor.

Quick Taurus Facts

Element: Earth

Mode: Fixed

Strengths: Reliability, patience, practicality, devotion, responsibility, stability.

Weaknesses: Stubbornness, possessiveness, uncompromising

Famous People: Adele, Queen Elizabeth II, Mark Zuckerberg.

Romantic Compatibility: The calm and grounded Taurus pairs best with these signs: Cancer, Virgo, Capricorn, Pisces

Facts about Taurus

Fixed Earth

Taurus has two of the most stable astrological elements. It’s an earth sign and a fixed sign.

As the combination of the earth element and fixed modality, Taurus is very humble and down-to-earth. To some people, Taurus’s predictability is boring; others are naturally drawn to them because of how reliable and dependable Tauruses are.

Taurus and controversial don’t usually belong in the same sentence. But in a world where constant change is normal, Taurus is an exception to that norm. People’s divisive opinions and Taurus’s deviation from the norm can sometimes make them controversial in this new era.

As the fixed earth sign, Taurus is likely to get triggered by sudden changes, complications, and disappointments. However, the flipside of is that they are truthful and practical–grounded in the reality of what they see. They are very stable and persistent. Once they map out a path, they stick to it until they have reached their end goals.

Calm

Taurus folks are typically reserved and calm—almost zen-like. Words of insults do reach them, because they are excellent listeners after all. However, they often choose to just ignore toxic messages. In fact, when they have made up their mind, they may just ignore ALL messages.

Is there no limit to their calmness and patience? The answer is there is a point of no return. When Taurus’s tank of patience is maxed out, they don’t overflow—they explode. And you’ll be facing the wrath of an angry bull when that happens.

Strong-willed

Taurus is one of the most strong-willed signs. Their strong will and stubbornness are two sides of the same coin.

The bulls are persistent. This helps them to stay on a project until its completion. They are great with execution and their presence on a team is good motivation for others.

Their strong will is seen in their relationships with friends and loved ones. They make excellent employees, great long-term friends, and loyal partners.

Attention seeking

Taurus is not the biggest attention seeker of the zodiac. That award probably goes to Gemini or Leo. But under Taurus’s calm exterior, is the desire to be seen and be appreciated.

The bulls are hardworking and they just keep going at it day after day. This is Taurus’s philosophy: gradual improvement via repetition. And they apply it to every area of their life. For example, family, relationships, and work.

But they do yearn for validation to keep them going. Being a quiet, introverted, fixed earth sign, they’re not the type that asks for validation. To them, if you’re really worth their time, you should have noticed and shown them appreciation that they deserve.

Financially wise but…

The Taurus sign has an inherent understanding of the importance of money. This understanding mostly stems from their need to feel secure. It’s hard for them to live a stable life if there are constant money problems.

They understand the importance of money and enjoy all the material things that they can afford. This coupled with their strong work ethics means that they usually work hard in pursuit of money. Not only do they work hard, but they also have a good habit of organizing their finances. Don’t be surprised if they do double-entry accounting for their personal account.

Typically, a Taurus person hardly lives above her means. But influenced by Venus, Taurus can sometimes get addicted to splurging on indulgence. They just love that feeling of being able to own nice things.

3. Aries-Taurus Cusp ♈♉ (April 16 – April 22) – The Cusp of Power

People born between April 16 and April 22 are born on the Aries-Taurus Cusp, also known as the Cusp of Power. Since this is the only cusp in April, it is sometimes called the April Cusp.

A cusp is not a star sign. Instead, it refers to the period when one zodiac sign slowly fades out to make way for the next sign. People born on the cusp (known as the “cuspers”) sometimes possess mixed traits and characteristics from both signs.

Quick Aries-Taurus Cusp Facts

Cusp: Cusp of Power

Strengths: Strong, energetic, fun, smart, humorous, and courageous.

Weaknesses: Stubborn, pushy, harsh, selfish, and love for control

Romantic Compatibility: They do good with air signs and those of earth affinity.

Facts about Aries-Taurus Cusp

Authority and Charisma

Being born into this cusp makes you a firecracker. You are naturally authoritative, controlling and you are born to dish out orders. However, your method of exercising authority is charismatic rather than autocratic. This seems contradicting but that is just how it is with some Aries-Taurus cuspers.

Mars is a planet of motivation and drive, while Venus embodies the power of persuasion. The combination of both energies makes for great leadership and brings you influence. You are destined for all-around success and people feel comfortable looking to you for guidance and inspiration.

Courage and Energy

The cuspers are courageous and they dare to face any obstacle. In most cases, their brain does not even interpret certain challenges as obstacles, they are too positive-minded to notice difficulties. Notwithstanding, they are as practical as can be.

This may give off a stubborn vibe as they hardly ever quit, even in tough situations. This is because they rarely recognize tough as tough. They believe that they always have what it takes to scale through.

Independent

People born on the Cusp of Power give off the vibe where they do not need support. They give all the support needed but never open up to their need for support, and when offered they rarely accept. This eventually creates distance between them and their loved ones. Mostly, they are their own best friends. And although they are strong enough to live independently, they will do better with support.

Conclusion

Two star signs coexist peacefully (or do they?) in the month of April. They are the fiery Aries and earthy Taurus. We’ve also gone beyond just vanilla zodiac signs and look at the cusp of Aries-Taurus. People born during this period are said to possess traits that are not defined by either one sign. Instead, they combine both signs to varying degrees.

To wrap this up, the narrative about these star signs and the cusp of April should help you grasp your uniqueness and the people around you. So, which of the stars tell your story?

These three gemstones are the birthstones of April. Find out the identities, origins, and myths of these April gems–as well as their meanings and symbolism.

April & Birthstones

April is the fourth month in the Gregorian calendar. In the Northern Hemisphere, April is considered spring in countries such as the US, UK, Canada, and Germany. The origin of its name is ancient. Long ago, the Romans named the month Aprillis in Latin. Many believe that since Roman months were named in honor of gods and goddesses, and that April was a sacred month for the Goddess of Love Venus, April might have been derived from Venus’s equivalent Greek goddess Aphrodite.

Birthstones or natal stones are gemstones that designate your birthday. Besides monthly birthstones, there are designated gemstones that represent your particular birth year, birthday, day of birth, and zodiac sign. It is important to understand that it is a fluid list. Throughout history and across different cultures, there had been a number of different gemstones designated as the April birthstones. For the purpose of this article, we’re picking three unique gemstones to represent April: diamond, sapphire, and opal. The former two are the most popular April birthstones in the western culture while the latter, opal, is a mystical birthstone that originated from ancient Tibet that will add some variety to this list.

Three Birthstones of April

1. Diamond

Diamond is both a modern and traditional birthstone for April. The symbol of forever love has stood the test of time and remained on April’s birthstone roster.

The name ‘diamond’ came from the Greek word ‘adamas’ meaning ‘unconquerable; indestructible.’ A natural diamond takes billions of years to form. While there are other factors to consider, diamond is generally considered the more expensive gemstone compared to other gemstones.

In terms of chemical composition, diamond is a transparent crystalline form of carbon that is four times harder than corundum. In fact, it is one of the hardest natural materials found on earth.

Cutting a diamond requires knowledge and craftsmanship because of its extreme difficulty. Only one in a million rough diamonds are large enough to produce a one-carat diamond. Today, the ‘Golden Jubilee’ holds the title of being the largest cut diamond in the world. The 755-carat rough stone was cut and polished by Gabriel Tolkowsky. It took him two years to design the world’s largest cut diamond. The diamond was named ‘Golden Jubilee’ because it was sent as a gift to the King of Thailand for his 50th Coronation Anniversary in 1997.

Aside from being a symbol of love, diamond also symbolizes strength, perseverance, courage, elegance, and luxury. Wearing a diamond is beneficial for it is believed to make you become strong physically. Diamond is purported to carry energy that promotes mental clarity that helps you to overcome the challenges and difficulties in life. For being one of the hardest materials in the world, it is understandable that diamond is also believed to be a protective gemstone that protects the wearer from physical harm and curses. As a specific example, diamond is believed to ward off the curse of evil eyes. One anonymous second-century BCE poet wrote about this particular belief about diamond:-

The evil eye shall have no power to harm
Him that shall wear the diamond as a charm.

For over 500 years, diamond has been the most preferred jewel for engagement rings and wedding rings. This tradition can be traced back to medieval Europe in the year 1477 when Mary, Duchess of Burgundy, received a diamond engagement ring from Archduke Maximilian of Austria. This inspired many wealthy people and other royalties. Later on as diamond became more affordable (but still expensive), it became a common practice among regular folks.

2. Sapphire

Above: Cut sapphire gemstone. Credit: johno49 @ Pixabay

Sapphire is a traditional birthstone for April. Some call it the ancient April birthstone because its history as an April gem traces back to the Renaissance period. Nowadays, sapphire is perhaps better known as the September birthstone, but the fate of April borns and sapphire are intertwined through centuries of association, and that isn’t something that you can just shake off. Tiffany’s birthstone poem in 1907 gave a nod to sapphire’s position as April birthstone (see the beginning of this article).

Although sapphire exists in many different colors, its most famous color is blue. Due to the presence of different chemical elements, sapphire forms in all possible colors. Besides blue sapphires, other sapphire colors are yellow, purple, green, brown, violet, orange, pink, colorless, and black.

The mysteriously fascinating black sapphire is a variety of corundum. It can either be in semitransparent or opaque form. The Black Star of Queensland mined in Australia is the world’s largest black star sapphire which weighs 733 carats. A star sapphire is a unique variety that displays a prominent star pattern that seems to float on its surface. The rare gem was cut by Harry Kazanjian who decided to sacrifice over 400 carats for it not to lose its star pattern.

In terms of meaning and symbolism, sapphire takes a different direction from its modern counterpart diamond. While sapphires are also believed to protect to their owners, the blue gemstones are better known as a symbol of truth, sincerity, intelligence, knowledge, wisdom, and nobility. Sapphire also has a heavenly connection, for it was believed that it symbolizes heaven. For this reason, sapphires were worn by clerics of the Middle Ages.

Sapphire is a good gift option for those born in April considering its positive vibrational patterns.

3. Opal

Above: Opal and its rainbow colors. Credit: tshearer@Flickr

Opal is the mystical birthstone for April and a modern birthstone for October. The mystical birthstone list originated from a Tibetan culture that existed from the 7th to 9th centuries AD. If you’re interested in the metaphysical realm, this mystical birthstone may just have a stronger spiritual connection to April borns better than its modern and traditional counterparts.

The name opal was derived from upala in Sanskrit. Upala means “jewel,” or “stone.” Interestingly, opal used to be a popular female name in the US in the early 20th century. However, its popularity dwindled as the century unfold.

Opal differentiates itself from other gemstones with its unique rainbow hue, better known as “play-of-color.” The gorgeous array of colors that seems to be trapped inside this stone will always leave one mesmerized.

Chemically, the opal gem is a shapeless form of silica that is chemically combined with water molecules. The stone forms as the silica deposits are carried by rainwater into cracks and voids through the earth.

Opal symbolizes truth, hope, purity, and energy.

People born in April are lucky to have this rainbow gem as their birthstone. Just like the rainbow, opal brings the promise of better days and grants the feeling of hope to its wearer. It is also believed to possess moon energy that can boost intuition. Coincidentally, opal is one of the stones that can be found in the moon together with peridot.

April Birthstone Poem

She who from April dates her years,
Diamonds shall wear, lest bitter tears
For vain repentance flow. This stone
Emblem of innocence is known.

Innocent, repentant —
Sun and shower —
Wears a diamond or a sapphire
As her dower.

The April birthstone poem found at the beginning of this article and in the image above was published by Tiffany’s in 1870 and 1907.

In 1870, Tiffany & Company (also known as Tiffany & Co. and Tiffany’s) published twelve poems dedicated to the monthly birthstones in a pamphlet. The poems were credited to an “unknown author.” From the source that we have, we believe that only the first stanza of the poem was published during this time.

About forty years after that, in 1907, Tiffany’s published Natal Stones: Sentiments and Superstitions Associated with Precious Stones authored by George Frederick Kunz. In the 30-page book, a second stanza was added for each of the poems. The second stanza for the April poem was the only one that gave acknowledgment to the older April gemstone which was sapphire.

The book also suggested that the April flower was Daisy.

Find out what are Birth Flowers of April. What are their meanings? And what are the stories behind their names? Get your answers in this article.

The month of April was named in honor of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty. April is when all the spring flowers really begin to bloom as the temperature rises and the days get longer. Earth Day is celebrated in April and there is no better month more fitting to honor Mother Nature. People born in this month are courageous, outgoing, and firm. The flowers which represent them are characterized by purity, true love, innocence, and blissful pleasure. According to the language of flowers, these are the defining characteristics of those born in April. Let’s get to know the birth flowers for April babies and understand the meaning for each of the flowers.

Daisy

Daisy is the primary birth flower for those born in April. Bellis perennis is the scientific name of this yellow disk flower with radiant white rays and spoon-shaped leaves. Bellis comes from the Latin word “bellus” meaning pretty, and “perennis” in Latin means “everlasting.” The daisies are not only beautiful, but they also last a long time in the water, making them a perfect gift. If properly taken care of, cut daisies can last a week in a vase before they start losing their freshness. The name “daisy” is an alteration of “day’s eye.” In the morning, daisies open up to face the sun but close their heads at night, thus the name. The simple charm of the golden daisy has extended uses in the fields of culinary and herbal medicine. Daisy leaves can be used as ingredients for soups and salads. Extracted juice from daisies can also bind wounds and cuts.

The pretty flower comes in several colors between white, red, yellow, and pink. White is the most well-known color, and it represents purity and innocence. Making daisy garlands has been a long-established practice among children. The white daisy is also a symbol of childbirth and motherhood which makes it a thoughtful congratulatory gift for new mothers. People born in April are characterized as courageous, and that matches the symbolism of the red daisies. The red daisy symbolizes bravery, and receiving a bouquet means that the sender offers his passionate and courageous love. The vibrant yellow daisy represents friendship and happiness. Send some yellow daisies to your friends as a cheerful reminder that you care for them. The yellow color of a daisy can also mean “I will not tell.” If a friend shares a secret, you may send yellow daisies to convey the message that the secret is safe with you. Pink daisy means gentleness and romance that makes it a perfect flower to offer to your beloved. As spring rise to its height, the outgoing April babies will be ups-a-daisy to celebrate life and that’s a daisy!

Sweet Pea

Sweet Pea is the secondary birth flower for those born in April. Lathyrus odoratus is the scientific name of this beautiful, papilionaceous, and fragrant flower. Lathyrus is a Greek word that means “pea,” and “odoratus” in Latin means “fragrant, perfumed.” The sweet pea resembles a fringed butterfly, and it can climb up to eight feet over walls. This April flower also comes in many color varieties such as white, pink, blue, and red. Having sweet peas will rid the house of flies because these insects do not appreciate its pleasant smell. Native to Sicily and the Aegean Islands, the flower became popular in the late-Victorian era after a Sicilian monk sent its seeds to England in the 17th century. Like the daisies, sweet peas also have an exceptional vase life to make them a perfect flower to beautify our homes.

The symbolic meaning of sweet peas has been established and deeply embedded in some cultures. In France, it is customary to offer sweet peas to brides to attract good fortune. It is also widely used as a design for tattoos, especially among women. Sweet peas represent blissful pleasure and bittersweet goodbye. It can be a perfect farewell gift to a traveling friend that is a sign of gratitude for the fond memories shared. White sweet peas are a symbol of gratitude, and the subtle pink sweet peas are the most commonly used in weddings. The blue ones represent respect and admiration. And the red sweet peas symbolizes courage and desire. Growing sweet peas in your garden would be an excellent idea because the more you pick the flowers, the more they blossoms. Gather the blooms early while they still have dews and surround your home with their sweet scent for days.
